Tips about how and where to experience the vibrant Amalfi Coast nightlife!

Amalfi Coast nightlife

Nightlife on the Amalfi Coast tends to gravitate around the glamorous seaside town of Positano. In the summer, holidaymakers have every excuse to stay up until the early hours of the morning, dining in one of Positano's panoramic sea edge restaurant's, drinking in any of a series of fashionable bars and pavement cafes, and dancing the night away at Music on The Rocks, the legendary discotheque on the Spiaggia Grande beach.

A night on the town in Positano

When in Positano, those in the know stop off at Buca di Bacco for an aperitif, served on the little patio facing the beach where, especially in the summer, you might easily find yourself brushing shoulders with the stars of both the small and big screen. Clients who decide to stay on for dinner, are accommodated upstairs, in the terrace restaurant.

Other cult dining venues include the water's edge Le Terrazze restaurant, a well-established favorite among V.I.P watchers (you might easily spot Positano-regular, Denzel Washington here), and the Chez Black and Le Tre Sorelle restaurants, where customers are served at tables looking onto the beach.

If your idea of a good night out is one spent in an exclusive environment, far from the crowds, you'll love Palazzo Murat: a historic hotel occupying a beautifully restored 18th century villa.
Elegant aperitifs and gourmet dinners are served in the hotel's botanic garden, illuminated by a thousand candles.

Heading towards the beach of Fornillo, you'll come across Next 2: a restaurant and wine bar with a spectacularly panoramic terrace. Famous for its minimalist-chic interiors and super-cool lounge and jazz music, Next 2 stays open until the early hours in the summer months.

As the clock strikes midnight, you'll want to start making your way to Music on the Rocks, Positano's only disco, on a cliff edge terrace, within steps of the sea.

Dancing with the stars

The Amalfi Coast's most famous night club is located in Praiano. Created inside a natural cave, almost at sea level, Africana first opened in 1962.

After having been closed for a number of years, the discotheque where The Platters once performed, has recently reopened and, although the music and the clientele have changed, the magical atmosphere is the same.

In the 1960's and 70's, there was hardly a member of the international jet set who didn't, sooner or later, come to strut their stuff on Africana's dance floor: including the celebrity couple, Aristotle Onassis and Jackie Kennedy.
Other high profile regulars of the period include the classical ballerina Rudolf Nureyev, who lived on one the islets of the nearby Li Galli archipelago, the writer Gore Vidal and the Queen of Holland.
