In bad taste!

We sat down with our family of 13 for a lovely dinner on our last night on the Amalfi coast. This place had been recommended by the owner of the villa we rented. The food was good, not exceptional. Service was generally attentive, but our entire experience took a hard turn downhill when we were presented with the check. The check was almost €1,700 including several bottles of not inexpensive wine. As we were paying with our card, the waiter asked us how much of a tip we wanted to add and gave us the absurd choices of 20%, 25% or a breathtaking 30%! My husband said how about 15%, which is already a lot in Italy and the waiter insistently repeated 20, 25, or 30. Not wanting to cause a scene and because we had elderly parents with us, we gave them the 20% and left with a bad taste in our mouths. We will never return to da Gemma and will tell others to avoid it.

Unfortunatley a poor experience. Service was both rushed and slow, the food was relatively medicocre and we felt very forgotten. We had to remind our server that we hadnt recieved our wine after getting our first course. Admonished for using the wrong plate during our bread course and the focaccia was dry and bland. We had to ask for our bill three times and we were served the wrong second course when it arrived. We were made to feel sized up as we arrived and that assumption led to the service, food and general lack of attention we received all night. Which was a shame as we would have happily spent more for more, had we felt welcomed. We booked the night before, online and watched other couples and families have a better experience then we did. Which sums the whole place up rather well.

Well-maintained and quiet location, right in the center of Amalfi. A terrace worth visiting, fresh fish, the grand crudo is recommended.

We popped in one afternoon to make a last minute reservation and requested a table on the terrace. On arrival we were shown to a lovely table overlooking the busy street below, great for people watching. We had a bottle of red, the carpaccio starter to share which they were nice enough to divide onto two separate plates for us, genovese pasta and beef fillet, tiramasu, mille-feuille, and they also brought us a palate cleanser of coconut ice cream and pineapple, and lovely mini cakes & limoncello with our espresso at the end of the meal, every single thing was delicious, the best meal of our stay in Amalfi, the staff were also lovely and friendly, and despite the restaurant being busy we never felt rushed. We would definitely visit again.
