A bed on the beach (well, almost!)

  1. Just three steps and you're on the beach of Marina del Cantone
  2. A delicious fish supper at the "Pappone"' restaurant
  3. The spectacular views of the sea surrounding Nerano

The colors, scent, and sound of the sea. From La Certosa, a charming little 3 star hotel in Massa Lubrense, the beach of Marina del Cantone, and the shimmering sea washing the Bay of Nerano are, quite literally, just 3 steps away.

It is not by chance that the hotel is called La Certosa. The traces of large arches visible on the façade are a reminder of how, in the 15th century, the building served as a monastery. Recent restoration work has ensured that the original barrel vaults and ceramics, typical of the Amalfi Coast, be conserved.

The quintessence of Mediterranean style

A family friendly, quintessentially Mediterranean hotel, La Certosa provides guest accommodation in spacious double, triple and quadruple rooms. A number of sea view bedrooms' open out on to their own private terrace from where to enjoy the sunset, disturbed only be the sound of the waves.

Special seafood

Only the very finest of seasonal ingredients are used to create the delicious local dishes served in "Pappone"'s restaurant. The fish is so fresh and full of flavor that you'll be tempted to eat it raw, accompanied by a glass of one of the fabulous white wines conserved in La Certosa's well-stocked wine cellar.

Enjoy the Amalfi Coast

From La Certosa, just a few steps and you're on the hotel's private beach. This is where guests are likely to spend much of their holiday, basking in the sun or swimming in the incredibly clear and perennially warm Mediterranean sea. Those wishing to explore the area can hop aboard a boat with and sail along the Amalfi Coast, to the nearby towns of Positano and Amalfi or, across the water, to the Island of Capri.

A perfect holiday

Everything about the hotel confirmed the excellent reviews. It's a beautiful and peaceful place and staff are kind and attentive, Alessandro was lovely to talk to and very helpful. We had a comfortable room overlooking the bay and could hear the waves on the pebbles as we went to sleep and woke up. It's a good place to snorkel and there are great walks, we had Sunflower and Cicerone guides. It's a steep walk up to Nerano and Termini but worth it to see the local landscape, or you can get the bus. It's a good area for birds and butterflies and we met friendly local people on our walks. Do try the limoncello granita in the old art cafe at Nerano!

Wanderfull holiday Hotel immaculately clean, confortables beds, free beach, gorgeus food, continental breakfast included abundant and perfectly done overlooking the bay. Cant say enough about the staff, alfonso, alessandro and especially massimo and others. Always ready to help and assist you on everything you need. Public buses to sorrento every hour and cheap. Excursions to capri, amalfi etc from outside hotel door. We highly recommend this jewel and certainly be back in future.

I arrived at Hotel la Certosa quite late (10pm) and Alfonso was incredibly welcoming, he even carried my suitcase up the stairs to my room for me (and it was heavy)! The hotel is beautiful and I felt like I was staying in someone’s home, rather than a standard commercial hotel. I’d emailed Alfonso a couple of times before arriving to ask a few questions and to check if my late arrival was ok, he always responded quickly and I immediately felt reassured and comfortable about staying here. My room was lovely, and very clean. There was a small entrance which separated the main room and the bathroom, and I was delighted to find that I had a balcony which overlooked the mountain! The bed was much larger than I expected and the wardrobe easily fit all of my clothes in. The bathroom sink was a very good size and there was no issue with the shower pressure and temperature. My room was cleaned and the bed was made every day. The tourist tax for here is €2.50 per day, which I felt was very reasonable. I had paid for bed and breakfast and I was not disappointed - I couldn’t believe the amount of food that was laid out on my table! There were croissants with different fillings; warm bread; jams and spreads; fruit; cold meats; cheese; yoghurts; cakes; and, of course, coffee! The cherry on top was the incredible view I had of Nerano Bay, absolutely stunning. Staying at Hotel la Certosa means that you automatically have a sun lounger provided, so no need to rush to save a space! I had forgotten my beach towel but was immediately provided with one once I asked for it. After spending some time on the beach, I decided to have lunch at the hotel restaurant, Da Pappone. Once again, I was not disappointed. The Sorrento tomato and mozzarella salad and the seafood scialatielli were wonderful! I was unsure about how to get to Sorrento, however the lady who works in the Alimentari Tabacchi shop over the road was incredibly helpful. She showed me the bus timetable and I was able to purchase bus tickets in the shop (€1.50 each way). It takes around an hour to get to Sorrento train station. The app I found most useful for travelling was the Unico Campania app. Here you can plan your route and pay for your tickets. I also used Google Maps to make sure I was going to the correct location for my excursion pick-ups. As a solo traveller I was particularly nervous about travelling to Sorrento, Pompei and the Herculaneum, however the bus drivers and train ticket staff were always very helpful and friendly. They would always explain which bus would take me to Nerano Cantone (where Hotel la Certosa is) and which train or platform I needed for each journey. One thing I didn’t realise about the trains is that the Campania Express charges €15 each way (Sorrento to Naples) because you are guaranteed a seat. However, I realised (from the Unico Campania app) that standard train tickets only cost €2.80/€3.50 each way, depending on your journey. Towards the end of my stay, I decided that I wanted to visit Capri. Cooperativa S.Antonio were recommended and their excursions leave from directly outside the hotel. This is a fantastic day excursion and I was very grateful for the recommendation by the hotel. On my final day my transport wasn’t due until 5pm, however Alfonso offered to let me keep my room until I was ready to leave. This was very much appreciated and made my final day much less stressful! I had an absolutely fantastic stay at Hotel la Certosa and would highly recommend others to stay here, particularly if you are a solo traveller.

The location is perfect. Room was clean and comfortable. Every morning we were served a buffet breakfast at our table overlooking the Mediterranean. Had lunch twice and food is delicious. Follow that with drinks on the beach. Small town with one store and many restaurants. A wonderful place to get away and really enjoy Italy without the crowds.
