I Chose Villa Franca for the Golf Cart. Here’s What I Wish I Knew.

I chose Hotel Villa Franca for one reason: the golf cart. If you've researched where to stay in Positano, you probably understand why. After three nights at Hotel Marincanto, with its private beach club access, we spent another three nights at Villa Franca. I had researched both extensively, and with Positano's endless stairs and steep climbs, Villa Franca's complimentary golf cart transportation was ultimately what convinced me to book. Ironically, it became one of the most frustrating parts of our stay. The cart runs only during certain windows, with large gaps in service. When it starts running again, guests gather to wait, but there is no organized queue and only five seats (you have to wait 30 mins for the next one). Twice, we had been waiting first and other guests simply walked ahead of us and took the available seats. I came to a five star hotel to relax, not to defend my territory and let my gangster side out over a golf cart. What bothered me more was seeing other guests appear to be dropped off outside the designated zones, while we were specifically told that wasn't allowed when we asked. Maybe there was an explanation we weren't given. I can only speak to what we observed and how it felt. As guests of color, there were moments when we genuinely felt we were being treated differently. To be fair, Villa Franca does many things beautifully. The staff was attentive, questions were answered quickly, and communication through WhatsApp was excellent. The hotel itself is immaculate and undeniably five star in appearance. But there is a difference between service and hospitality. Service can be polished. Hospitality has warmth. Villa Franca is dressed almost entirely in black and white, and strangely, that became the perfect metaphor for my stay. Beautiful, polished and carefully curated, but somehow lacking color, warmth and soul. The contrast was especially noticeable after Marincanto, where the staff felt warm, bubbly and authentic. Villa Franca is a beautiful hotel, but I would not return. Five star luxury is not only about what a hotel looks like. It is about how you feel while you're inside it.

As a luxury travel agency director, this is among the finest hotel teams I have ever worked with. I organised a special trip for VIP clients, and the whole team was flawless: reservations (thank you Francesco and Camilla) confirmed everything within hours, and the concierge team of Gianluca and Marcello were available around the clock, arranging a private Riva yacht day, a Michelin star dinner, a VIP table at Music on the Rocks and seamless transfers, even coordinating with the next hotels on the itinerary. Not 100 percent, 101 percent. My clients had the trip of a lifetime, and Villa Franca now has a permanent place on my agency’s list for Positano. Highest possible recommendation.

Paid over $1300 a night and had basic things that a $100 holiday inn motel would have. The Television in the room didn’t work. The electricity cut out multiple times. Staff had an attitude. Really would recommend elsewhere
