Palazzo Santa Croce

Climb the 190 steps of a narrow street in Li Parlati, and through the scented gardens of this small old village (or take the convenient public elevator from the main road), you'll be able to reach Palazzo Santa Croce, a royal villa overlooking Positano from a steep cliff. The villa is today part of the exclusive properties of the Il San Pietro Hotel group.

A History Between Faith and Art

The palazzo began as a small monastery before becoming a bishop's residence in 1716; it was during this Baroque period that the stuccoes, frescoes and lacquered doors that still define the building today took shape. In the 20th century, the villa became home to Bauhaus artist Edward Gillhausen, who turned it into a true cultural salon, hosting figures such as Picasso, John Steinbeck and Alberto Moravia. In 2003, the property was purchased and skilfully restored by its current owners.

On the first floor, the two opulent suites at the Palazzo Santa Croce, dedicated to King Alfonso of Aragon and his wife, Queen Isabella, will offer you a fairytale experience: high ceilings, wall paintings, antique mirrors, and princely beds will make you feel like a noble of the 18th century. The Queen Isabella suite preserves the sacred style of its former episcopal use, with a private altar surrounded by religious paintings. Upstairs are the remaining rooms, decorated in a more sober, elegant style, bringing the villa to a total of 5 bedrooms.
