July is one of the busiest months on the Amalfi Coast, with hotels, beaches, and restaurants crowded with tourists and the waters off the coastline of Positano and Capri thick with luxury yachts of the international jet set. You'll find even the quietest villages overrun with visitors this month, especially during the midday hours.
These are the dog days of summer, with high temperatures, merciless sun, and rare rain showers. Pack light summer clothes, with more elegant options for dining out in the evening. We recommend flat shoes for women, especially for Positano and Capri...opt for the pretty sandals made by hand along the coast that are both dressy and easy to wear on the steep coastal lanes.

The best option to enjoy your visit during this hot and crowded month is to head for the waves by spending the day at the beach or on a boat. If you want to do touring or hiking, take advantage of the cooler and quieter early morning and late afternoon.
Reserve your sun bed on the beach and enjoy the crystal-clear waters of the coast. The beaches are small and generally covered with small pebbles, or have beach club platforms built on the coastal rocks directly above the water. Choose to spend your day on a beach that is accessible only by sea in July to avoid the worst of the crowds, and take a water taxi or shuttle service from Positano and Amalfi.

You can book a private boat with skipper from a number of towns along the coast for a few hours or an entire day. The traditional boat is called a “gozzo”, a wooden boat with a large sun deck, perfect for exploring the coast in leisure, stopping for a swim or to admire the scenery.
From Amalfi and Positano, you can also opt to join a shared group tour, with boats that fit 10-20 passengers total for trips to Capri or along the Amalfi Coast. This is the perfect option for those who are looking for a less expensive option than a private boat tour.
The warm July evenings are perfect for a night on the town: the center of the nightlife on the Amalfi Coast is the Spiaggia Grande in Positano where the bars, restaurants, and Music on the Rocks disco set directly on the coastal cliff fill with people. Another club that has been part of the coastline's Dolce Vita for years is Praiano's Africana, located directly in a sea cave on the waterfront.
