Quintessentially Mediterranean, effortlessly elegant, Hotel Botanico San Lazzaro is one of the most exclusive 5 star properties on the Amalfi Coast. On the hills of Maiori gazing out towards the sea, the hotel is a harmonious composition of graceful arches, shady loggias and sun-drenched terraces set in a magnificent botanic garden containing over 2000 species of plants.

Hand painted ceramics from Vietri, furniture custom-made by Tuscan cabinet makers, satellite television, high speed internet connectivity, and exclusive bathroom courtesy products by Designers Guild: Hotel Botanico San Lazzari's bedrooms and suites are the result of a sophisticated combination of tradition, comfort, and technology. Those looking for the ultimate in Mediterranean luxury should try to book the much sought-after "Premier Special Suite", complete with panoramic terrace, Jacuzzi and in-suite gym.

Guests dining in Hotel Botanico San Lazzaro's "Donna Clelia" restaurant enjoy delicious Neapolitan cuisine, served either in the elegant dining room or on the sweeping sea view terrace. An excellent range of cocktails and tasty snacks are available in the Grusonii Lounge bar.

Using the hotel's shuttle bus, guests quickly reach Maiori's Moorea Beach Club and the sea. Those unwilling to leave the comfort of the hotel will, no doubt, spend much of the day in the garden, lazing by the recently inaugurated swimming pool and fitness area.

When you want to improvise a five-star experience on the outskirts of an ultra-popular area.

The structure appears dignified, but transforming it into a boutique hotel is a whole different matter. Let's start with the staff: willing but completely untrained. Perhaps suitable for a three-star rating. Leaving only one waitress at the breakfast tables on Sundays (with the hotel practically full) is a sign of truly improvised organization. A boutique hotel should be a sign of tranquility. Well, allowing the noise of children in the pool for an entire afternoon without any staff member being able to restore, if not silence, at least a minimum of tranquility, with the childish justification "after all, this is a hotel for children too," brings us back to what has already been illustrated about the incompetence and unpreparedness of the staff, but especially of those who hired them, completely forgetting the training phase. Sea view, certainly; but before seeing the sea, the view must cross an entire neighborhood of public housing: among other things, the only way to access the entrance of the structure. Creating a boutique hotel on-site, which by its intrinsic characteristics should be akin to an oasis of tranquility, well, the Cimini family would have been better off leaving the terraces designated only for an exotic garden. Creating and then knowing how to manage a 5-star hotel is a different matter... and, evidently, not for everyone.

Highlight of Our Amalfi Coast Trip

We had a wonderful 4-night stay in late April 2026 at this hotel. If you want to visit the Amalfi coast, I'm fully convinced this is the best option if you want a luxurious hotel with the best views for a "reasonable" price. At the time of my research, this hotel was approximately half the price as an equivalent room at an equivalent hotel in Amalfi or Positano. Every member of the staff we interacted with was extremely welcoming, respectful, and clearly wanted to ensure we had a good time and were well cared for. Most of them had good enough English for it to not be a problem at all for us (Americans). We stayed in the Comfort Room which comfortably slept my wife and my sister, although it was a little tight with 3 adults. Not a lot of drawers/closet space, and the bathroom is tiny. The shower had extremely good water pressure though and stayed hot for all three of us showering one after another. Beds and pillows were comfortable. Housekeeping was VERY thorough every time they came through, even making sure to fold all our clothes that we left out and wrap up loose cables. The pool was very nice, and because the hotel is so small, we basically had it to ourselves the one day we decided to use it. And the views from basically anywhere at the hotel were just as good if not better than the high priced views we saw in Amalfi, Positano, and Capri. The front desk also happily organized a taxi for us when we wanted to explore Ravello, which was another experience I'd highly recommend. I would happily recommend this hotel to anyone.

Three days of relaxation

The hotel is definitely quaint and particular, I would say unique for the location. Very nice gardens, although they could be a little more manicured. There is a sense of neglect or at least of sufficiency. It could and should be, being a five star, much more welcoming, cared for and offer superior Service. Absolutely to avoid the restaurant woman Clelia that does not offer an adequate menu and has prices completely out of the average. Nothing to say about the staff who are ‘up to the task, kind and polite, but you still perceive the lack of a management figure. To improve the directions to find access, not easily visible.

A tiny coastal settlement traditionally inhabited almost exclusively by fishermen, agricultural workers, and their families, the peaceful little town of Maiori is one of the Amalfi Coast's best kept secrets.

Perched on a natural terrace from where it dominates the historic center, Hotel Botanico San Lazzaro combines faultless hospitality with a magnificent view of the bay. From Maiori, the legendary towns of Amalfi and Positano are just a short bus, car or boat ride away.

Ravello, Furore, Cetrara, Vietri sul Mare, Cava dei Tirreni and the city of Salerno are, likewise, situated within easy reach of the hotel. Only a little further away, the archeological areas of Paestum and Agropoli and the National Park of Cilento and Vallo di Diano are all well worth a visit. The city of Naples is just over an hour's drive away.
