Visiting the Amalfi Coast in April

Welcoming spring on the Amalfi Coast

Visiting the Amalfi Coast in April

April is the month in which the Amalfi Coast, Capri, and Sorrento officially reopen for the season: hotels, restaurants, and shops are ready for the spring, and ferries begin their high season schedules with routes connecting to the towns along the coast.

This is a great month to explore the Amalfi Coast, as long as you are not expecting a “beach vacation”.

Aside from the days surrounding Easter and Italy's spring bank holidays (25 April and 1 May), you'll find the coast pleasantly quiet, and you'll be able to stroll through the towns and walk the hiking paths without the stress of the summer crowds.

April Weather in Positano

The weather can still be a bit unpredictable in April on the Amalfi Coast, but temperatures are generally mild and there are more hours of daylight as the weeks go on. We suggest packing loafers or athletic shoes and jeans, as well as sandals and lighter clothing. It is generally too cool to swim in the sea, but the sun is warm enough for the beach to be pleasant, as well as lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants.

  • Average high temperature (in Celsius): 19° C
  • Average low temperature (in Celsius): 13° C
  • Chance of rain: 25%
  • Chance of clouds: 42%
  • Average sea temperature (in Celsius): 16° C
  • Average daylight hours: 13

Easter Celebrations

If you are visiting in April, you may be able to see some of the traditional Easter celebrations on the coast.

In Sorrento, there are a number of religious processions that take over the town streets on Holy Thursday and Good Friday, with hooded locals parading religious statues and crosses after nightfall. In Minori, a group of locals sing religious hymns that date from the 1300s and have been passed down through the generations.

April is also an ideal time of year for a day trip to Capri from Positano or Amalfi.
